July 19  Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport, Tanzania.  You'll be met on arrival and transferred to River Trees Lodge in Arusha for overnight.

July 20  After breakfast at the lodge we'll drive out into the African bush and enter Tarangire National Park, where the elephants and the giraffe roam. Check into the Tarangire Safari Lodge, which is set on a small escarpment overlooking the Tarangire River. There is a swimming pool for everyone to enjoy. During this dry season all the animals will congregate along the river, which is the only water source in the area. There's great game viewing right from the Lodge. Birds of prey soar. Later in the afternoon we'll drive further into the park for more game viewing.

July 21  Full day drive out across the rolling grasslands of Tarangire, set with scenic baobab and acacia trees. We'll see herds of wildebeests, impalas, and perhaps a lion. Return to the Lodge later in the day to enjoy the sunset from the patio.

July 22  Drive 2 hours to the town of Mto Wa Mbu for a visit with the local people. We'll stop by a school that should be in session and share their lessons. We'll also visit some homes in town to see how these friendly people live. Continue on to the Manyara Serena Lodge for lunch and overnight. It's set on the edge of the Great Rift Escarpment, looking down across the Rift to Lake Manyara. There is also a lovely swimming pool here, perhaps the most scenic pool in Africa.  Later in the afternoon we'll drive down into Lake Manyara National Park to see all the wildlife that lives along the lake. Huge herds of buffalo live here. Great families of baboons play along the road, and myriad water birds flock along the lakeshore.

July 23  An early morning drive back into the park to see all the animals waking up and making their way to the lake for a drink.  Return to the Serena for lunch and overnight. Spend the afternoon at the lodge, in the pool or exploring the natural surroundings. Those who wish can return to the park for more animal viewing.

July 24  Early morning departure for Ngorongoro Crater, where we'll spend the day cruising through this spectacular wildlife sanctuary. The Crater is 12 miles across, the largest such crater on earth. On the crater floor live zillions of animals; antelope, zebra, buffalo, elephants. We'll see lions prowling, looking for their next meal. We might even catch a glimpse of one of the last remaining black rhinos on earth here. At the end of the day drive up to the rim of the Crater and check into the
Ngorongoro Serena for dinner and overnight.

July 25  After breakfast we'll drive further into the African bush. First we'll stop by a Maasai village to see how they live, and how they've learned to survive so well in this difficult environment. The Maasai are a handsome, colorful and independent people who mostly graze cattle, but who have many unique customs they will show and explain to us. Then we'll drive to Olduvai Gorge where the earliest hominids were discovered. There is a very well-done museum with graphic displays of these fascinating discoveries, the place where Man was born.  Finally we'll enter the famous Serengeti, perhaps the best-know wildlife park on earth. It's rolling grasslands, picturesque rock outcrops and open acacia woodlands support some of the largest herds of animals on earth. Late in the day we'll check into Mbuzi Mawe, our tented camp that's set among the outcrops and the woodlands.

July 26  A full day of driving around the Serengeti, viewing extraordinary scenes of wildlife in their native habitat. This will be an unforgettable day. Return to Mbuzi Mawe for dinner and overnight.

July 27  After breakfast drive to the airstrip, say good-bye to our driver/guides, and fly to Zanzibar Island, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. We'll be met on arrival and taken to the Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel, right on the beach.

July 28 & 29  At the Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel, enjoying the ocean and the beach and the resort.  There will be plenty of activities, including swimming, snorkeling, beach-combing, yoga, and scuba-diving (take a resort course and do a dive!).

July 30  Return to Zanzibar Airport for our flight to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where we'll start our international flights home.
